Inhalation as a preventative measure
Inhalation as a Preventive Measure
Inhalation is a highly effective therapy, not only in cases of acute illness. Inhalation as a preventive measure: It has also proven effective as a preventive measure against colds and lung diseases. The pulmonologists of the German Lung Foundation (DLS) draw attention to this fact. This is because the vapors/aerosols increase the moistening of the mucous membranes. This promotes the natural self-cleaning mechanism of the lungs and literally flushes out pathogens – before they can settle and trigger an illness.
Inhalation of saline solutions (e.g., Isomar seawater solution) and nasal rinsing are most sensible for preventing colds. There are isotonic inhalation solutions with a salt content of 0.9% and hypertonic seawater solutions with 3% salt content. Isotonic solutions are ideal for moistening the respiratory tract, as a preventive or supportive measure for colds. Hypertonic saline solutions support the natural protective function of the respiratory tract and contribute to the regeneration of overstressed mucous membranes.
