Acapella Choice Breathing Trainer

The breathing training contributes to a positive influence on the course of obstructive diseases. The Acapella® Choice blue PEP device is a device for respiratory therapy that loosens mucus and secretions through vibrations and promotes the transport of secretions from the airways. The device can be used by patients with respiratory diseases in any position, including sitting, standing, or lying down.
The Acapella® Choice blue helps to open the airways of patients with lung diseases who have secretion problems, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis, or asthma.
The Acapella® Choice blue breathing physiotherapy device is the successor to the Acapella® Choice green. The "blue" is built to be slightly more robust. Additionally, the scaling has been color-coded for improved handling and readability. Please refer to the user manual for cleaning instructions. Features of the Acapella® Choice blue:

  • Breathing physiotherapy device for home use
  • Works in any position – whether sitting or standing
  • 22 mm connection for use with a mouthpiece
  • Easy to clean, autoclavable, and boilable
  • Resistance frequency easily adjustable via numbered dial
  • Can be used with a mask or mouthpiece. No additional accessories required.
  • Required expiratory flow rate of the patient 10 L/min (during exhalation)

Application of the Acapella® Choice blue:

  • Thoroughly clean hands before use
  • Set the dial on the back of the device to the setting recommended by the doctor. With an optimally chosen resistance, exhalation should last 3-4 seconds without causing shortness of breath.
  • After placing the mouthpiece in your mouth, take a deep breath.
  • Hold your breath for 2-3 seconds while the device remains in your mouth.
  • Exhale for 6-9 seconds while the mouthpiece is still in your mouth.
  • Repeat the process 2 to 3 times a day for about 6 - 7 cycles, each with 20 breaths and extended expiration. The expiration should last 3 - 4 seconds longer than the inspiration.
  • After you have repeated this process, remove the mouthpiece and clean it (daily cleaning recommended)
  • Perform 2-3 coughs with an open mouth

Physiotherapeutic Breathing Therapy In many patients with respiratory diseases (such as cystic fibrosis, COPD, or bronchiectasis), thick mucus accumulates in the airways, which can lead to recurrent inflammation and even pneumonia. To liquefy this frequently infected secretion, affected individuals should perform a moist inhalation daily at home, as well as before the respiratory physiotherapy treatment – a three to six percent saline solution (available at pharmacies) is suitable for liquefying thick mucus.
Physiotherapeutic breathing therapy is an essential part of the non-medication treatment of respiratory organ diseases. Various manual applications, breathing, and movement techniques support patients in restoring their optimal breathing function. The breathing physiotherapy techniques for secretion mobilization are effective and provide significant relief for patients. Benefits of PEP Therapy Oscillating PEP systems create flow and pressure fluctuations (vibrations) that are transmitted to the bronchi. Patients exhale against a built-in resistance in the device. The PEP effect and vibration are generated with the help of a magnet and a moving lever. The vibrations are transmitted from the device to the bronchi and help to loosen the secretions and make them easier to transport. With regular use, the course of obstructive diseases can be positively influenced, and performance/mobility can be significantly improved. PAP therapies ("Positive Airway Pressure"), which also include PEP therapies (positive expiratory pressure), are used as part of a broader bronchial hygiene treatment to mobilize and remove secretions, especially in patients with atelectasis, asthma, COPD, and cystic fibrosis. Exhaling against a resistance prevents a rapid drop in pressure in the collapsed lung structures.
During the use of breathing physiotherapy devices, such as the Acapella® Choice blue, the affected airways can be cleaned through a combination of manual application with vibrations and breathing techniques – for example, through the so-called ROTA-KOM-PEP technique. ROTA-KOM-PEP stands for rotation, compression, and PEP breathing. The breathing-synchronous wide fluctuations – that is, the contraction and re-expansion – of the airways are supported by a thoracic spine rotation and a rib compression technique. In this way, the secretions are mobilized from the smallest peripheral airways and transported into the central airways – that is, towards the large bronchi and trachea – so that they can be coughed up.Breathing trainer with mouthpiece for therapy with positive expiratory pressure (PEP) to mobilize secretions. The therapy promotes the clearance of secretions, is more tolerable than physical breathing therapy (CPT), takes only half the time of conventional CPT sessions, and facilitates the opening of the airways in patients with lung diseases and secretion problems such as COPD, asthma, and cystic fibrosis. The frequency and flow resistance can be easily adjusted by turning the adjustment dial.
